DESIGNING FOR MINDFUL REFLECTION

Stuff of Thought, a solo painting exhibition by visual artist Li Montalvo, invites visitors to slow down in a world that rarely lets them, and the design had to do the same. I shaped the exhibition layout so that each turn through the space creates room to stop, look, and linger, guided by labeling and explanatory copy that is clear and unhurried and never competes with the work itself. Environmental and promotional graphics extend the exhibition’s visual language from the gallery walls to the printed page and the screen, giving the project a consistent presence before visitors ever step inside. For student groups, I developed interactive activities grounded in recent developments in attentional pedagogy, turning looking into a practice and curiosity into a habit. A lightweight web-based audio guide completes the experience, with the artist personally leading visitors through a series of reflective mindfulness exercises that bring the exhibition’s central idea of a “sacred pause” to life. The result is an exhibition where every design decision, from the wall text to the walking path to the voice in your headphones, works toward a single invitation: to be fully present with the work, and with your own thinking.
